Herbert Clever Jolly, age 87, of Hillsboro Road, Hillsboro, passed away
Saturday, August 3, 2019, at the Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg.
Born November 20, 1931, in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Elzie Lee and Lydia Bowles Jolly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond Jolly, David Lee Jolly, and Charlie Jolly, and four sisters, Juanita Jolly, Geneva Rammel, Virginia Boling, and Helen Steele.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Charlotte Crain Jolly, on January 2, 2018.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Trent and husband Linden of Hillsboro; two sisters, Mae (Buster) Ramey of Flemingsburg and Faye Lewis of Franklin, Ohio; a host of nieces and nephews; extended family members; and his canine companion Australian Shepherd, “Buddy”.
He served in the U.S. Marines Corps for two years and reserves for six years. Herbert was the owner of Jolly Charolais for over 50 years and loved farming and raising Charolais cattle.
In 1967, Herbert was one of the organizers and founders of the Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department. He served as a member of Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department for 28 years and was Fire Chief for five years. Herbert was instrumental in establishing rural water to Hillsboro. He received citations from the Commonwealth of Kentucky and E.P.A. for the closing of Maxey Flats nuclear waste dump.
Herbert loved kids and never met a kid he didn’t like to pick at. He did not have a favorite, he loved them all. He always looked forward to the Sunday gossip session at the Hillsboro Store.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 7, 2019, at Hutton Funeral Home with Brother Richard Engle and Brother Willie Skaggs, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Fleming County Cemetery with full military honors presented by Flemingsburg Franklin Sousley VFW Post 1834 and American Legion Post No. 5.
Pallbearers: Norman Harn, Johnny Vise, Ted Howard, Andy McDonald, Gary Jolly, Bobby Conley, and Barry Emmons. Honorary pallbearers: Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department members.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2019, at Hutton Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
