John Micheal Barnes, age 79, of Hillsboro, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 19, 2021, at St. Claire HealthCare in Morehead.

Born August 2, 1942, in Tallassee, Alabama, he was the son of the late Mac Lee Barnes and Mary Barnes Boozer.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mac Barnes, Jr. and Rex Barnes, and a nephew, Mason Barnes.

John is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Vivian S. Barnes, whom he married March 11, 1988; one son, John Mark Barnes of Boston, Massachusetts; one sister, Mary Anne Short of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Beverly Barnes of Carrollton, Mississippi, and Joyce Barnes of Hornbeck, Louisiana; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Dadeville High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Auburn University.  He then attended Morehead State University and earned a master's degree in vocational education. John was a vocational school instructor at Boyd County and Rowan State Vocational School in Morehead, KY.  He served as principal at Blackburn Correctional Facility in Lexington and Morgan County Correctional Complex in West Liberty. In addition, he was a state electrical inspector for 30 + years.

John was a member and trustee of the Hillsboro Christian Church and he considered everyone there his family.  He was a Master Mason of Lodge 654 of Morehead, a member of El Hasa Shriners, and a past member of the Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department. John enjoyed gardening, fishing, horseback riding and meeting people.

Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, December 23, 2021, at Hutton Funeral Home with Brother Jim Hamm officiating. Burial will follow at the Hillsboro Cemetery.

Pallbearers: Dwight Malone, Ashley Kidd, Mose Schlabach, Eli Schlabach, Zack McClurg, and Dan Prater.

Honorary pallbearers: Jimmy Patterson, Brad Barnes, Robert Gutierrez, Tim Smith, Lionel Smith, Gerald Saunders, and Dale Abbott.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 22, 2021, at Hutton Funeral Home, 7634 Hillsboro Road, Hillsboro, KY 41049.
