Jesse Oscar Smoot

Jesse Oscar Smoot, age 89, of Ringos Mill Road, Hillsboro, passed away Monday, May 27, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born May 11, 1935, in Fleming County, he was a son of Jesse Goble Smoot and Pansy Ethel Pierce Smoot.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his ex-wife and best friend, Barbara Allen Martin Smoot; one daughter, Lisa Louise Spurlock; two sisters; and two brothers.

He is survived by four daughters, Katie Jolly (Gary), Mary Vise (Kenny), Debbie Gray (Boyd), and Patricia “Nell” Skaggs (Willie), all of Hillsboro; one son, Jesse Smoot, Jr. (Tracy) of Vanceburg; 15 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and other extended family and friends.

Also surviving are two brothers; two sisters-in-law; as well as several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. 

He was former self-employed concrete masonry and construction worker and farmer. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Private graveside services will be held at Hillsboro Cemetery with son-in-law Pastor Willie Skaggs, Jr. officiating.   Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

At his request, there will be no public visitation or services.
