Randall Dean Pettit, born September 28, 1954, passed away on November 22, 2021, at Ridgeway Nursing Home in Owingsville, Kentucky, following a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Josephine Pettit of Grange City; his sister, Tresia Swain of Morehead; and his brother, Anthony Pettit also of Grange City.
Randall is survived by his son, Travis Pettit of Morehead; his daughter, Lacy Pettit of Lexington; his sister, Melinda Rollins and her husband Dr. James Rollins of Mt Sterling; his former wife Regina Pettit of Morehead; his brother-in-law, Adrian Swain of Morehead; his nephews, Gabe Swain of Mexico City, Mexico, and Luke (Allison) Swain of San Francisco, California; and his grandchildren Sophia and Hunter Pettit of Morehead.
After graduating from Fleming County High School in 1972, Randall worked at different times in manufacturing and construction, but hunting and gathering in the hills surrounding his childhood home in western Fleming County were his greatest passions. He was an expert in hunting morel mushrooms, ginseng and yellow root. He loved his time exploring God’s creation.
Randall was a small man in stature but as many have said “He was tough as nails.” He battled several different cancers for over a decade. Even in his last stages of his life he continued to haul materials for individuals and continued his harvesting of walnuts, mushrooms and wild roots.
Randall was enjoyed by his friends as a cheerful, energetic person, and loved by those who provided his care towards the end of his life.
The family would like to thank Hospice, Ridgeway Nursing Home and Windsor Care for their compassion and care of Randall in his final months.
Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. on Friday, December 3, 2021, with a celebration of life immediately following at 2 p.m. at Hutton Funeral Home, 7634 Hillsboro Road, Hillsboro, KY 41049 with family and friends officiating.
Memorial donations in Randall’s memory are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351.
