Rawleigh “Rod” C. Smoot, age 84, of Markwell Road, Hillsboro, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia.
Born September 25, 1938, at Ringos Mill in Fleming County, Kentucky, he was the son of Jesse G. Goble and Pansy Ethel Pierce Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Billie Jean Smoot Smith and Lillian Faye Smoot Finch, and one brother, Joe Smoot.
Rawleigh is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dixie Fearin Smoot whom he married on January 24, 1964, in Maysville, Kentucky; one son, Ricky C. Smoot and his wife Jackie Johnson Smoot; and two grandchildren, Stacy McKenzie Smoot and Jonas Patrick Smoot, all of Hillsboro, Kentucky.
Also surviving are three brothers, Clark Smoot and wife Pat of Converse, Indiana, Jesse “Tone” Smoot of Ringos Mills, Kentucky, and Robert Smoot and wife Kathy of Jackson, Kentucky; one sister-in-law, Diane Smoot of Morehead, Kentucky, as well as several nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Rod was a U. S. Army veteran, lifelong farmer, and masonry contractor. He worked with his son Ricky for more than 40 years with Smoot Concrete. Although work was perhaps his favorite pastime, he did enjoy hunting occasionally. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and brother who will be greatly missed.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at Hutton Funeral Home with Pastor Harley Sexton, Jr. and Pastor Willie Skaggs, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post 126.
Pallbearers: Timmy Vise, J. T. Rawlings, Ricky Brown, Jody Gray, Ricky Lewis, and Leroy Reed. Honorary pallbearers: David Duncan, Barry Manning, Billy Joe Cogswell, Jason Robertson, and Joseph Smoot.
Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at Hutton Funeral Home, 7634 Hillsboro Road, Hillsboro, KY 41049.
